Last Call For Applications: ABURY Design Experience 2018

Once again, the ABURY Design Experience returns for its 4th edition in search of emerging designers to create an accessory capsule collection using traditional crafts knowledge from different cultures. The Abury Design Experience (ADEx) seeks to revive a fading handicrafts spirit among young designers and urge them to invigorate declining artisanal heritage by applying a modern design sensibility and forward-thinking vision.

ABURY is the first fashion platform that brings together exciting designers with traditional artisans from remote and inspiring cultures. This exchange of knowledge between the old world and the cutting edge allows for a new context to emerge, leasing crafts a new life and lending design an emotional component which has been missing in recent times. The designer is embedded in a craft culture for roughly three months to learn and share ideas from one another and to create a collection together, bringing the best of heritage knowledge and wisdom to high design and sustainable solutions.

ABURY is looking for graduate students in fashion or accessory design, or recently established fashion/accessories designers who have a passion for crafts, culture and cutting-edge modern design. Applicants should at least be 21 years old, be available from July to September 2018, from any nationality and for the 2018 edition, a basic command of the Spanish language is required.

Applications became available for online submission from the 19th of March 2018. The closing deadline is 25th of May 2018, midnight (UTC+1) and up to 9 semi-finalists will be chosen by ABURY. They will be featured on the Abury website for online public voting and the 3 most voted designers will be presented to the ABURY jury, who will select the 2018’s winner. The final result will be announced on a LIVE STREAMING event at the ABURY Design Experience Facebook Page – date yet to be determined (mid-end June). The winner will spend 4 to 6 consecutive weeks in Chile between July and September 2018, developing a handmade collection for ABURY, together with the Wengan artisans by Fundación Artesanías de Chile. Among the prestigious jury panel is Fashion Africa 254 Founder and CEO Waridi Schrobsdorff who is calling African designers to be part of the ABURY Design Experience and apply for the competition before the deadline.
