Discovering the Kigali Fashion scene

As we all know by now, Waridi loves the jet-set lifestyle, whether in her private life or business. That she always seems to be catching flights appears to be a no-brainer!  So hopping on the next plane, she currently found herself discovery the beauty of the land of the thousand hills, also knowns as Rwanda. Consistently on the lookout for African design talents, she successfully detected promising established designers that will soon be showcasing their collections in Addis at the hub of Africa.

Introducing Joselyne Umutoniwase, fashion designer, film director, and editor founded her brand Rwanda clothing in 2012. She sells her distinct custom-made designs in Kigali city in her own shop. As custom-made clothing is a regularly used service in Rwanda, Joselyne wanted to add a new twist to the ordinary concept. Traveling to Europe and expanding her knowledge by visiting small shops with a similar notion, she went back and realized her dream, by opening her own little shop and watching it slowly grow alongside with her. Giving her customers the chance to be creatively involved in the making of their garments, she creates something unique that adds to her brands’ service.  Receiving an individual and perfectly tailored unique outfit each and every client walks out of the store with a feeling of complete satisfaction.

Moise Turahirwa is the founder and director of the Rwandan based fashion brand Moshions. The 27-year-old fashion designer kickstarted his career as a runway model in 2011 and was crowned Mr. Kigali in 2014, making himself a name as the most promising fashionista in the regional scene.

Inspired by African fabrics and cultures, he started designing his outfits under the name Moshions (Moses Fashion). Presenting his first collection‚ the A‘ summer temptation’ at numerous Rwandan social gatherings and fashion events all over the continent. Like Kigali Fashion Week, Swahili fashion week 2015 (Tanzania), Abryanz Style & Fashion Awards (Uganda), Mercedes Benz Africa fashion festival (Ghana), MFWN (Nigeria).

Moses concentrates mainly on menswear, perfectly tailored suits and shirts giving each piece a rare merge between contrasting elements and a raw urban edge. However, his collections also may include some haute couture designs and a few ready to wear women’s wear pieces.

Suhaa Schmitz was initially born in Kenya, grew up in Uganda and is currently based in Rwanda. Where she creates glamorous yet straightforward fashion items and designs. Combining Kazuri beads from her homeland with sparkling Swarovski crystals. Sourcing materials from all around Kigali to Kenya, Suhaa produces genuinely African jewelry that will make every woman shine individually.
