Virgil Abloh – Today’s Most Hyped Fashion Mogul
Virgil Abloh probably is this year’s most hyped fashion designer. But why is he so celebrated and what makes his designs so unique? For this weeks post, I am going to reveal everything you need to know about one of the most influential fashion figures of our time.
The Ghanaian-American was born and raised in Rockford Illinois. In 2002 he graduated from the University of Wisconsin and in 2006 from the Illinois Institute of Technology receiving a degree in civil engineering and architecture. Later on, in 2009 he made his first step into the fashion world by interning at Fendi in Rome. This is where he met rapper Kanye West. A year later Kanye kickstarted Virgil’s carrier by making him the creative director of his company DONDA. Thriving in their collaborative relationship, he became the artistic director for Kanye’s and Jay-Z’s Album ‚Watch The Throne‘ in 2011. The unstoppable creative mind then launched his first company, Pyrex Vision, a small boutique bringing together streetwear and couture. Abloh purchased deadstock garments screen printed designs on them and resold them for prices up to 550 dollars. However, he closed down the Company a year later, as his only intention was for it to be an artistic experiment.
2013 Virgil founded his first Fashion house and second business ‚Off-White‘ in Milan, describing it‚ a grey area between black and white as the color Off-white.’ After launching his first women’s wear line at Paris Fashion week, he collaborated with various companies like Nike and Ikea. But this March he made his mark in fashion History by being the first person of African descent to be the head of the Louis Vuitton’s menswear line. Showcasing his first creations at this year’s Men’s Fashion Week in Paris. He created exclusive, iconic, futurist looks in piercing colors for his close celebrity friends like Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West, Rihanna, Kylie Jenner and Bella Hadid for attending his legendary show.
